  1.
  2.     There remains the
  3. pleasurable task of thanking
  4. various people without whose
  5. contribution this book either
  6. would not have been completed
  7. or would not contain whatever
  8. may be clear, well illustrated,
  9. and meritorious in it. It was
  10. Linda Chaput, Editorial Director
  11. of the Scientific American
  12. Library, who suggested the idea
  13. for this book and steered it
  14. through the various stages of
  15. publication. It was Jonathan
  16. Cobb who so intelligently,
  17. skillfully, and diplomatically
  18. edited it, acquiring knowledge
  19. of the field of perception along
  20. the way in order to do so, ably
  21. aided and abetted in the process
  22. by Heather Wiley. It was my
  23. friends Carl Zuckerman and
  24. Charles S. Harris who once
  25. again sacrificed their time and
  26. energy to help by reading
  27. various drafts and suggesting
  28. revisions. It was Sylvia Rock
  29. who typed much of the
  30. manuscript, often under the
  31. pressure of deadlines, and who
  32. kept our family afloat during
  33. the long periods when I was too
  34. immersed in writing to be of
  35. much use to anyone else.
